Austin MacRae
Austin MacRae
Contemporary folk music with sensitive finger-picking, well-crafted lyrics and a touch of harmonica.

Bio: Austin MacRae began playing guitar in his teens, teaching himself chords on his father’s ’57 Gibson J-45. Early influences included Neil Young, Gordon Lightfoot, Peter, Paul & Mary, and Joni Mitchell. In 2012 he formed The Brothers MacRae with his brother, Devon, and high school friend, Casey Widger, on upright bass. Over the past few years, the group has played numerous venues around Central New York, including Homer Center for the Arts and Bill Knowlton’s Bluegrass Ramble Picnic. In 2014 the group added fiddle player Sophia Orzechwoski, a New Hampshire native with many years of experience on the Northeast folk circuit. The Brothers’ first album (self-titled), produced by Chris Merkley of Old Boy Records, was released in 2014. The album was nominated for a Syracuse Area Music Award (SAMMY) for Best Americana Album of 2014. The Brothers quickly followed up their first album with their sophomore release, The Old Parade, in the fall of 2015. The Old Parade was nominated for Best Americana Album of 2015 at this year’s SAMMY Awards.

Meanwhile, Austin was beginning to play solo shows around the Ithaca, NY, area. He released his first solo album, Bats in the Attic, in the fall of 2015. This past March his solo album won a SAMMY Award for Best Folk Recording of 2015. He is continuing to promote the album throughout the Central New York region and is hoping to broaden his audience in the coming year.
